Faran Flad absoluut hoogtepunt van Folkwoods, Eindhoven

De 12e editie van Folkwoods is er niet een die in de top 3 van Folkwoods zal eindigen. Niet qua weer, het was nat en grijs. Ook niet qua muziek, maar daar zijn dan nog een aantal lichtpuntjes te ontdekken, met als absolute hoogtepunten Faran Flad, I Beddi en Klezmofobia. De eindafrekening slaat zo toch weer door naar een geslaagde editie.

De toppers
Elke dag kende een topper. Op vrijdag was dat Faran Flad in tent 2, een band die bestaat uit een mix van Belgische (Vlaamse) en Angelsaksische muzikanten. En dat is dan ook de muziek die zij maken.  Het ene moment hoor je een deuntje dat op een boombal niet zou misstaan en het andere moment komt er een geïnspireerde versie van The Leaving of Liverpool voorbij, waar elke goede traditionele Keltische folkband trots op zou zijn.

Faran Flad komt uit Belgie, maar legt zich toe op Keltische folk met fluiten, viool en percussie. Dat doen ze goed, klassiekers als Molly Malone worden afgewisseld met een paar eigen nummers en uptempo dansen met een fijne ballad. Al snel vult de vloer voor het podium zich met danslustigen, die zich lekker uitleven op deze fijne muziek. Tegen het einde zet de band er nog even extra de sokken in, met o.a.  het door Heather Grabham mooi gezongen The Fair Maid en Shaking of The Sheets, hetgeen flink wat publiek geboeid houdt en voor flinke drukte zorgt bij de cd-verkoop.

Faran Flad is a lovely mixture of Flemish/Belgian acoustic folk and Celtic/Anglo-Saxon roots music. This results in a unique, colourful and beautiful palette of traditional folk music. The name Faran Flad means 'travel splendidly' and this is what this new quartet want to do. They take us along new paths to reach old destinations. Every now and then they stop to play their own compositions. The line up of the band is English, Flemish and Walloon. The four excellent musicians in the band are all well known in the world of folk music.

Singer and whistle player Heather Grabham grew up in the middle of the English traditional music. She plays and sings in multiple bands in England but became famous in Belgium through her singing with Kadril ('The Other Shore' project).

Here she met Erwin Libbrecht, one of the founding members of Kadril, not just thé Flemish folk-rock band but they also discovered Lais and Eva Deroovere.

Jan Debrabandere is one of the driving powers behind bands as Paddy Murphy's Wife and Green Jacket.. His DADGAD guitar is the harmonic and rythmic engine of Faran Flad.

Luc Pilartz is one of the best fiddle players in Belgium. He also plays the bagpipe in a superb way. His most famous bands are Verviers Central, Panta Rhei (with Steve Houben), Trio Trad and his own Luc Pilartz ensemble.

This band is well recommended for those who love jigs, reels, slow airs and authentic folk songs.
